MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. 8 ARM SLING APPLICATION PURPOSE: An arm sling is used to immobilize or support the arm, elbow and forearm. A sling must be ordered by the physician. RESPONSIBLE PERSONNEL: Nursing Staff PROCEDURE: 1. Explain the procedure. 2. Triangle arm sling placement: a. Position sling with point of triangle beyond elbow and one end over the shoulder of injured side b. Place affected arm at a right angle over sling, across lower chest. c. Bring lower corner of the sling over arm to shoulder of affected area. Secure a knot on the side of the neck. Padding may be necessary behind the neck to prevent discomfort and skin abrasions or irritations. d. Cup sling at elbow and secure with safety pin. e. Check wrist and fingers for support and adequate circulation. f. Change sling as necessary. Sling may be washed. 3. Contoured arm sling placement: a. Open Velcro closure and remove strap from metal rings. b. Place arm inside sling with elbow in the contoured corner. c. Bring strap around neck. d. Bring metal rings together and pull strap through both rings. Adjust for comfort, and close with Velcro. 4. Instruct patient or caregiver in use of sling. DOCUMENTATION: Document in patient's record the application of the sling, time of application and pertinent observations. Document specific instruction given the response of the individual to that teaching.
