MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. 56 HAIR AND SCALP CARE PURPOSE: Patients are assisted with care of the hair and scalp as appropriate to provide comfort and to enhance sense of self-worth by improving appearance. RESPONSIBLE PERSONNEL: All staff EQUIPMENT: Hair care supplies provided by the patient SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: The style in which the patient wore his or her hair while independent should be considered when styling the hair during illness. A style which the patient views as appropriate will enhance the feeling of self- worth. For corn row braiding, it is important to instruct caregivers to remove the braids for shampooing the hair or rebraiding every ten to fourteen days. This encourages new hair growth and promotes general scalp health. Each patient should be assessed for known allergies to hair care products. New hair care products should be introduced one at a time so that any adverse reaction can be identified and properly associated. Caregivers should be instructed to observe regularly for signs of irritation, dryness, loss of hair, cleanliness and in some cases, insect infestation. Changes in the condition of the hair should be brought to the attention of medical personnel. Under no circumstances is any MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. employee to participate in applying a hair rinse, color or permanent to a patient. PROCEDURE: 1. Wash hands. 2. Position patient comfortably. Ascertain if any position is contraindicated. 3. Place towel under head and over shoulders. 4. Loosen hair and part. Separate gently into small sections and begin combing at end of hair, working toward the scalp. 5. Apply conditioner or light grease (if patient prefers) to the scalp. 6. Comb or brush to desired style, using equipment supplied by patient. Conditioner, grease, oil, gels or spray may be used if the patient provides/requests 7. Clean brush or comb of hair and discard. 8. Store equipment after use. 9. Wash your hands. DOCUMENTATION Document care on Clinical Visit Note. If further action is indicated, document follow- up/notification of clinical manager and/or physician. ___________________________________________________
