MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. NURSING STAFF GLUCOMETER COMPETENCY POLICY PURPOSE: Nursing staff competencies test and educate nursing staff upon initial hire and annually. Competency: Licensed nursing staff must demonstrate competency prior to performing the glucose monitoring test. A nursing staff competency is the knowledge or ability to perform certain skills mandated by our Agency Including the two way Glucometer Competency. This requires the nursing staff to demonstrate competent nursing practice, critical thinking and interpersonal relationship with patients, families and coworkers. PROCEDURE: 1. The Director of Nursing (DON, Clinical Manager) or qualified designee will identify the two forms needed to be completed to document the Glucometer Competency for each professional field staff. 2. Under the supervision of the DON, Clinical Manager or qualified designee the nursing field staff will demonstrate verbally and/or practically their abilities to perform the Glucometer Quality Control during regular patient service visits. 3. Upon demonstration of their abilities the DON, Clinical Manager or qualified designee will document in the two competencies form the results of the test performed. 4. The completed Glucometer Competency form will be signed by nursing staff/supervisor and filled in the nursing field staff folder. Field staff will be oriented: Quality review of the glucometer will be performed not less frequently than once a week or as Doctor/manufacturer instructions. If problems are noted during the quality review procedure, the glucometer will be taken out of service until it is repaired or replaced, and the DON, Clinical Manager will be notified immediately. Cleaning: Because of the possibility of disease transmission through glucometer use, the entire glucometer needs to be wiped down with a antibacterial wipe after each use.
