MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. 15 BEDPAN PURPOSE: Clients are assisted with bedpan use, as needed, when they are unable to use bathroom facilities. RESPONSIBLE PERSONNEL: RN, LPN, HHA EQUIPMENT: Bedpan, gloves. PROCEDURE: 1. Explain procedure to client. 2. Wash your hands: don gloves. 3. Provide privacy for client. 4. Lower head of bed to flat position. 5. Warm bedpan with warm water, as necessary. 6. Assist client onto bedpan, keeping narrow end of bedpan facing the foot of the bed. a. Ask client to flex the knees with his or her feet flat on the mattress. b. Help client to raise the hips by placing your hand under the small of his or her back. c. Turn client on the side toward side rail: place bedpan in position, and roll the client gently back onto the bedpan if he or she is unable to raise the hips. 7. Elevate head of bed to patient’s comfort level. 8. Assist client with comfort measures (i.e. put bed linen over client; put call device and toilet tissue within reach and allow for privacy if at all able). Client should not stay on bedpan for longer than 15 minute increments. 9. Assist client with bedpan removal. a. Help client to raise the hips by placing your hand under the small of his or her back. b. If client is unable to raise hips, turn client on side toward siderail, remove bedpan, and roll client back to original position. 10. Assist client with perineal care. 11. Assist client with comfort measures. 12. Dispose of bedpan contents. Clean and store bedpan.
