Apply the water soluble lubricant to the catheter tip. Set aside on the sterile field. Open specimen container. Set cap aside on sterile field. g. Before inserting the catheter, inflate the catheter balloon with the normal saline solution to inspect it for leaks. Deflate the balloon. h. Separate the labia majora with the non-dominant hand so that the urethral meatus is visualized. One hand is to maintain separation until catheterization is completed. i. Pick up cotton ball with your dominant hand using plastic forceps and wipe one side of urinary meatus. Discard cotton ball. Wipe other side with another cotton ball in the same way. Discard. Use only one cotton ball for each motion. Move top to bottom, front to back toward anal area. j. Do not allow labia to close over meatus once it has been cleaned. k. Pick up lubricated catheter with sterile hand and introduce it through urethral meatus l. Extend approximately 2-3 inches for adult, 1 inch for child, into bladder m. Do not force the catheter if it meets resistance. n. Discard catheter if it becomes contaminated. o. When urine flows, transfer non-dominant hand to catheter. p. Instill sterile saline through the appropriate port to inflate the Foley balloon. Attach to drainage bag. q. Tape the catheter to the patient's leg, with some slack between meatus and tape. r. If catheterization is for specimen collection, only collect specimen and remove catheter. s. Remove gloves. Wash hands. 11. For catheterization of male patient: a. Carry out the same preparatory phase as for the female patient. Place sterile drape under penis and sterile drape over pubic area. b. Lubricate approximately seven inches of catheter. c. Grasp shaft of penis with non-dominant hand, raising it almost straight up. Maintain the position until procedure is completed. d. Using forceps and cotton swabs, wash glans around urethral meatus with appropriate solution. If patient is not circumcised, retract foreskin using non- dominant hand. e. Insert catheter into urethra along the anterior wall until urine flows. f. If resistance is felt, slightly increase traction pressure on penis and apply gentle, steady pressure on the catheter. g. Do not force catheter if it meets resistance. h. Tape catheter to thigh or abdomen. i. Discard catheter if it becomes contaminated. j. Instill sterile saline or sterile water through the appropriate port to inflate Foley. Attach to drainage bag. k. Remove gloves. Wash hands.
