MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. 73 LEG BAG APPLICATION PURPOSE: The attachment of a leg bag urine collection device may be used on patients to discreetly collect urinary output while encouraging ambulation and independence. RESPONSIBLE PERSONNEL : RN, LPN, HHA with documented training where allowed by state regulation EQUIPMENT : Gloves, disposable drainage bag, sterile 4 x 4, tape, alcohol swabs PROCEDURE: 1. Explain procedure to the patient. 2. Wash your hands. Put on gloves. 3. Assemble leg bag, with straps in position. Squeeze air out of bag. 4. Strap the upper portion of the leg bag to thigh. Flutter valve is positioned at the top. 5. Strap the lower portion of the leg bag to calf with flutter valve positioned at the top. Drain valve should be positioned downward. 6. Pinch catheter with fingers of one hand to cut off flow of urine. Disconnect catheter from the bedside drainage bag tubing. Cover opening of bedside drainage bag tubing with sterile 4 x 4 and tape. 7. Always cleanse insertion site of leg bag with alcohol each time prior attaching to catheter. Empty bedside drainage bag. 8. Teach patient/caregiver to drain leg bag when ¾ full to avoid backflow of urine into bladder. 9. When long-term use of a leg bag is indicated, these may be washed with warm, soapy water, thoroughly rinsed, allowed to air dry and be reused unless otherwise indicated by the manufacturer. DOCUMENTATION: Document the use of the leg bag and any patient education regarding its use on the Clinical Visit Note .
