MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. 95 POSTURAL DRAINAGE AND PERCUSSION PURPOSE: Postural drainage is performed to help drain retained or infected secretions from the bronchial tree with the help of gravity. Postural drainage is done only under the order of a physician. RESPONSIBLE PERSONNEL: RN, LPN, RPT , LPTA SPECIAL CONSEDERATIONS: There are different conditions used in postural drainage. Each position drains a specific area of the lung. Postures assumed, length of time, and frequency are according to the patient's condition and in conjunction with specific physician's orders. If the patient develops shortness of breath, syncope, or has difficulty in handling secretions, the treatment should be stopped and the physician notified. PROCEDURE: 1. Explain the purpose of treatment to the patient. Offer warm, clear liquid to drink if not contraindicated. 2. Remove tight clothing. 3. Assist patient to assume ordered position. 4. If ordered, begin percussion over rib cage using firmly cupped hands. Do not cup over sternum, spine, stomach, kidneys. DOCUMENTATION: Document the time and date of the procedure, the area of treatment and the patient’s response to treatment. Document all patient teaching and the results of the teaching. If further action is indicated, document follow-up/notification of Clinical Manager or physician. ____________________________________________________
