MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. 103 RECTAL SUPPOSITORY ADMINISTRATION PURPOSE: Insertion of a rectal suppository is performed as ordered by a physician. All administration and teaching will be in accordance with specific physician's orders and state regulation. RESPONSIBLE PERSONNEL: RN, LPN EQUIPMENT: Disposable gloves, lubricant, suppository, tissue SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Absorption of systemic medications is affected by the presence of feces in the rectum. Suppositories are generally stored in a refrigerator to keep them firm enough for insertion. Contact with substances with the same or higher temperatures than body temperature causes suppositories to dissolve. PROCEDURES: 1. Explain procedure to patient/caregiver. 2. Wash hands. Put on disposable gloves. 3. Assist patient to left lateral position unless contraindicated. Flex right leg. 4. Unwrap suppository. Lubricate the rounded end of the suppository and index finger of dominant hand. 5. Separate buttocks. 6. Instruct patient to deep breathe through the mouth. 7. Insert suppository gently beyond internal sphincter using lubricated index finger. 8. Hold the buttocks together for several minutes for a patient with decreased sphincter control. 9. Clean anal area with tissue. Discard gloves. 10. Assist patient to comfortable position. 11. Wash hands. 12. Instruct patient/caregiver on the effect of medication, any side effects and proper storage. DOCUMENTATION: Document on the patient's Clinical Visit Note the medication administered, the dosage and route. Document patient response and tolerance to procedure. Document patient or caregiver education and response to education. Document any physician communication in clinical record.
