Have patient grasp both your shoulders while you support him firmly under axillae. Assist him to a standing position. 6. Give patient a buzzer, bell or noisemaker. 9. If possible, move the patient where there is family activity. 10. Instruct caregivers in safe transfer techniques. E. Transfer Non-Assistive Patient from Bed to Chair 1. Assist patient in putting on shoes, robe as needed. 2. Move chair parallel to bed, if possible. 3. If bed wheels or wheelchair is used, lock wheels. 4. Allow patient to sit on edge of bed with legs dangling for a few minutes to establish equilibrium. Provide standby assistance. 5 . Stand directly in front of patient. Lock patient's knees by bracing them against yours. 6. Support patient under the axillae. Lean patient slightly forward. 7. Pivot with patient slowly until he is directly above the chair. Gently lower him into the chair, bending at the knees and waist. 8. Cover the patient with blanket. 9. If possible, move where there is family activity. 10. Instruct caregivers in safe transfer techniques. F. Hoyer Lift Transfer 1. Explain the order and procedure for Hoyer lift transfer to the patient. 2. Use two individuals to assist and support in safe Hoyer lift transfer, as appropriate. 3. Position equipment necessary for smooth Hoyer lift transfer of patient. 4. Position patient in center of bed. 5. Roll patient toward you. 6. Place Hoyer lift sling folded half-way under patient so lower edge of lift sling is slightly below patient's knees. 7. Go to opposite side of bed. 8. Roll patient over the fold, toward you, and pull Hoyer lift sling out flat. 9. Position Hoyer lift so the lift arm lies perpendicular to and directly over bed, with Hoyer lift base legs spread wide. 10. Connect both ends of Hoyer lift chains to Hoyer lift side arms; have the same number of links on each side of Hoyer lift sling attached to Hoyer lift swivel bar. 11. Place patient's arms inside Hoyer lift chains with both hands in the lap. 12. Pump Hoyer lift hydraulic jack handle to raise patient from bed. 13. Swing patient's feet off the bed when he or she is lifted clear of bed. 14. Grasp Hoyer lift steering handles, and move patient away from bed. 15 . Stay with patient at all times while he or she is in the Hoyer lift sling 16. Position patient over wheelchair/chair. 17. Press/turn Hoyer lift hydraulic release valve, and push gently on patient's knees while lowering him or her into wheelchair/chair.
