MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. 192 PATIENT INSTRUCTION SHEET BEDSIDE COMMODE PROCEDURE • A bedside commode is used when it is difficult for the patient to walk distances to the bathroom. The following should be followed when the commode is being used: • The commode should be close to the bed. • Legs on the commode should have rubber tips. • The bucket of the commode should be emptied after each use and cleaned and replaced in the commode. • Disinfectant solution, such as Lysol liquid, should be placed in the commode after it has been cleaned to reduce odors. • Handwashing should be done after the use of the commode and after the commode has been cleaned. • Transfer safety precautions should be instituted when transferring from the bed to the commode. If the patient cannot transfer alone, then someone should assist him/her.
