MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. 230 POST EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS HEPATITIS POLICY: • Employee cases of important exposure to hepatitis will be referred for evaluation to receive prophylactic therapy. (See Employee Exposure to Infectious Diseases Policy.) • An important exposure is defined as follows: • Hepatitis A: Person-to-person contact, generally through fecal contamination or sexual contact. • Hepatitis B: Accidental percutaneous, ocular or mucous membrane exposure to blood known to be HBsAg positive and/or a human bite by a HBsAg carrier that penetrates the skin. • Hepatitis C: Same as Hepatitis B. RECOMMENDED PROPHYLAXIS: • Hepatitis A: Routine prophylaxis for Agency personnel is not indicated. • Hepatitis B: In the event of important exposure to KNOWN HBsAg positive blood, observe the following: Exposure Dose HBIG Timing Recommended Dose Vaccine Timing Recommended Percutaneous 0.06 mL per kg IM or 5 mL for adults Single Dose within 24 Hours OR** 1 mL IM Within 7 days*, repeat at 1 and 6 months 5 mL for adults Within 24 hours, repeat at 1 month * The first dose can be given the same time as the HBIG dose, but at a different site. ** For those who choose not to receive HB vaccine.
