MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. 233 ANTINEOPLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT PURPOSE: • Describe procedures for the identification, storage and handling and disposal of antineoplastic wastes. • Insure those wastes are handled and disposed of in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. • Insure that there is minimal risk to patient, family, staff, public and the environment. GENERAL INFORMATION: • Antineoplastic wastes are defined as those antineoplastic chemicals that remain in containers, tubes, vials or are wastes due to accident or spillage. • All persons required to handle antineoplastic agents, wastes or materials shall be provided with appropriate orientation, equipment and on-the-job training. STORAGE AND HANDLING: • All mixing of antineoplastic drugs shall be performed in a biological safety cabinet, with outside venting if feasible. • Special aseptic techniques and precautions must be used because of the vertical (downward) airflow. • Where possible, no other IV admixtures shall be prepared in biological safety cabinets designed for the mixing of antineoplastic agents, to reinforce the need for special precautions and procedures. • The biological safety cabinets shall be certified by a qualified technician, at least annually, or any time the cabinet is physically moved. • The biological safety cabinet's blower shall be left on continuously. • Drug preparations shall be performed only with the viewing window at the required access opening. • The number of personnel working with these agents shall be minimized. • Access to the compounding area must be limited to only necessary authorized personnel. • The personnel working with these agents shall be observed regularly by supervisory personnel to insure compliance. • Special procedures shall be followed for major spills or acute exposures.
