MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. DISPOSING OF SYRINGES AND CONTAMINATED DRESSINGS All contaminated dressings and syringes will be disposed of as mandated by Biohazardous and Biological Waste Management Rule 17-712. 1.All Registered Nurses will be provided with two puncture resistant red containers, in for needles and syringes, and one for contaminated dressings, and one box of clear plastic bags. 2.Needles and Syringes - the sharps container will be taken into the home for use. If large amounts of needles and syringes are used, the container can be left in the home until it is filled or no longer used. It will then be collected and brought back to the agency for proper disposal. 3.Dressing - Contaminated but not supersaturated having the potential to drip or splash will be placed in a clear plastic bag, secured and discarded in the home. 4.Dressings - Supersaturated (having the potential to drip or splash) will be considered bio- hazardous waste and placed in the red puncture-proof container and brought back to the agency for proper disposal. 5.All containers brought back to the agency will be identified. Staff bringing containers back to the agency will take containers to the medical supply manager and will identify source by signature on log, and amount of approximate weight. The log will be maintained by medical supply department. 6.The transporter will be notified by the agency that a pick up is ready and the waste will be transported every 30 days. 7.The transporter will sign the log and date on the day the waste is transported. 8.The transporter will take the container from the waste intake area of Home Health Care Agency and obtain a signature from the individual accepting the waste. 9.The log will be maintained for three (3) years and will be available for inspection by the Department of HRS. 10.Any problems or questions should be referred to the Home Health Care Agency Administration.
