MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. PREVENTION OF ACCIDENTS Accidents are usually caused by faulty equipment or by human weakness. The patient may be negligent or ignorant thus causing injury to himself/herself or others. The most common type of accident if falling. Elderly, weak or confused patients may fall out of bed. 1. ALWAYS RAISE SIDE RAILS ON BED IF PRESENT. 2. NEVER LEAVE PATIENT UNATTENDED. 3. PATIENTS MAY FALL ON HIGHLY POLISHED FLOORS. 4. SMALL RUGS WITHOUT SKID BACKING. 5. SPILLED LIQUIDS ON FLOOR. 6. REMOVE OR RE-LOCATE LOW PORTABLE PIECES OF FURNITURE e.g. footstools, floor flans, etc. Always remember, extra precautions are need for the elderly who cannot see or hear well or cannot move quickly.
