MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. COLOSTOMY CARE Purpose: To relieve gas; to allow for defecation; to help train colostomy to expel contents at same time dally. Equipment: 1. Same as for enema 2. Bedpan Procedure: 1. Bring equipment to bedside. 2. Explain procedure and screen patient. 3. Remove colostomy bag or dressing 4. Place bedpan slightly under patient's side. 5. Insert rectal tube into proximal end of colostomy and allow solution to run slowly into bowel. 6. Allow solution to return by asking patient to roll toward side of colostomy where bed pan was placed. 7. After solution has been returned, cleanse skin and apply clean dressing or bag. 8. Empty bedpan and return to stand. 9. Cover and unscreen patient. 10. Remove equipment, clean and return to proper area. Home Health Agency Nursing Care & Procedures K-40
