MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. PROCEDURE: HICKMAN CATHETER DRESSING CHANGE PURPOSE: To prevent infection, to keep clean and dressed occlusion type dressing. Change 3xwk and PRN. SUPPLIES: Catheter Care Dressing Kit or -3 alcohol swabs -3 betadine swabs -2 2 X 2 (1.V. type) - 1 plain 2 X 2 -1 roll 1/2" clear tape -1 plastic bag - skin protector. i.e. skin prep -1 transparent dressing T0 REMOVE DRESSING: 1. Wash hands thoroughly. 2. Don non-sterile gloves. 3. Remove old dressing being careful not to pull on catheter. CAUTION: Never use scissors around HICKMAN, BROVIAC or any central CATHETERS. 4. Examine site for redness, tenderness, inflammation, discharge or pain. If any of these symptoms are present, notify the nurse and physician immediately. 5. Discard soiled dressing in hazardous waste container. TO APPLY NEW DRESSING: 1. Don sterile gloves. 2. Open alcohol swabs cleanse in a circular motion starting at insertion site and moving outward away from the insertion site repeat above procedure being careful to use circular motion and not to return to the insertion site. - Repeat 3 times. - Do not reuse swabs/wipes. 3. Use iodine swabs one at a time to clean area and to remove any old ointment or dry skin. Use circular motion and work away from the insertion site. - Repeat 3 times - Do not reuse swabs. 4. Picture frame dressing with skin protector and dry well. Optional. 5. Apply tape to seat. 6. Coil catheter and tape in place. leave clamp and cap accessible, or infusion use. 7. Remove all soiled materials: * Never use Acetone. * If allergic to iodine (Betadine) hydrogen peroxide may be substituted. * If M.D. indicates another regime or patient previously taught another regime by hospital personnel4 continue with their regime assuming it is medically correct.
