MDT Home Health Care Agency, Inc. BIOMEDICAL WASTE PROTOCOL I. DEFINITIONS: Biomedical waste - any solid or liquid waste which may present at threat of infection to human. Examples including non liquid tissue and body part from human and other primates; laboratory and veterinary waste which contains human disease-causing agents; discarded sharp.; and blood products and body fluids from human and other primates. The following are also included: (a) used, absorbent materials saturated with blood, body fluids, or excretions or secretions contaminated with blood and absorbent materials saturated with blood or blood products that have dried. Absorbent materials includes items such as bandages, gauzes, and sponges. (b) Non-absorbent disposable devices that have been contaminated with blood, body fluid or blood contaminated secretions that have not been sterilized or disinfected by an approved method. (c) Other contaminated solid waste materials which represent a significant risk of infection because they are generated in medical facilities which care for persons suffering from diseases requiring strict isolation criteria and listed by the the U.S, Department of Health and Human Service., center for Disease Control. II. PROTOCOL 1. The type of biomedical waste found in our facility are sharp Containers that are unused and to be provided to patients. 2. Boxes that have been provided to be used in conjunction with red bags where any absorbent materials such as gauzes or dressing saturated with blood or excretions are to be placed when a dressing is changed. III. LABELING (a) All packages containing biomedical Waste, shall be labeled with the date at the tine they are placed into use. Sharp containers shall be labeled with the date at the time they are closed or at the time non-sharp biomedical waste is placed into them, whichever occurs first. (b) If a number of bags or sharps container are place into an outer bag prior to offsite transport, the labeling of the outer bag shall comply with above method of labeling, or as stated in subsection 64E-16.005 F.A.C. Inner bags and inner sharp container must also be labeled in the same manner. The date on the outer bag shall be the earliest date that an inner bag was placed into use the earliest date a sharps container was sealed, or the earliest data that non sharp biomedical waste was placed into the sharp container, whichever occurs first. (c) Outer containers and sharp containers shall be labeled at the generating facility prior to offsite transport. (d) The label shall be securely attached or permanently printed on each bag, sharp container, and outer container, and outer container and be clearly legible and easily readable. Indelible ink shall be used to print the information on the label. Ink used in permanently printed label shall be free of heavy metals. The following information shall be included on the label.
